Roof Types

There are a number of things to consider when selecting a new roof system. Of course, cost and durability head the list, but aesthetics and architectural style are important, too. The right roof system for your home or building is one that balances these five considerations. The following roofing products commonly are used for steep-slope structures.

Asphalt shingles are fire resistant and are categorized Class A, B or C – Class A is the most fire resistant with “B” and “C” being less. Fiberglass shingles are usually Class and organic shingles usually have Class C ratings. Both organic and fiberglass shingles are available in laminated architectural grades that have a textured appearance. Properties such as zinc and copper can be applied to these type of shingles as ceramic granule which help to protect against algae – common issue in places that are humid. Both come in various colors.

Wooden shingles are made with machines while shakes are usually handmade. Shakes have a ‘rougher’ looking appearance. Many wooden shingles and shakes only have a Class C fire rating - some building codes in various regions limit the use of these types of shingles due to concerns for fire. Shingle manufacturers have made Class A wood shingles and shakes available – they have incorporated factory-applied, fire-resistant treatment into the shingles and shakes.
